What's New

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Bridget Klemp from Marmion Primary School!  Bridget guessed the exact amount of jellybeans in the jar during the Plunge Into PEAC course.  Here's a picture of her "figuring out" page showing how she figured it out.  Enjoy those 715 jellybeans, Bridget!

Thanks to Padbury Senior High School!

Padbury Senior High School, the host school of our Padbury PEAC Centre, has been very welcoming of our students for 2010.

Here is their latest school sign:

PEAC Year Five Induction

Each year we welcome our newly identified Year 5 students to PEAC with two induction days. The first is held at the PEAC centres. For the second day we look to external venues to provide students with a range of hands-on, interesting and challenging activities. In the past we have held this induction day at venues such as SciTech, AQWA and Rottnest Island.

With 2010 being the Year of Biodiversity, the idea of using one of our regional parks began to develop. Neil Hawkins Park at Joondalup offered us the opportunity to be outdoors in an environment that is adjacent to Lake Joondalup. Therefore, one of our activities focused on the biodiversity of the lake, its health and importance. Other activities included: phys-ed based problem solving; art; a scavenger hunt based on the history of the park as well as its natural setting; handling and learning about reptiles and amphibians; and a drama activity focusing on the importance of trees. The PEAC program keenly promotes Art Costa's "Habits of Mind". Of these sixteen habits, "Responding with Wonderment and Awe", "Gathering Data through all the Senses" and "Taking Responsible Risks" were particularly evident over the course of the day.

The feedback from students and teachers has been enormously positive. Students have returned to their schools buzzing with excitement about the event and this has been conveyed back to us through their principals. All those involved in the day remarked that there was a feeling of enthusiasm for all of the activities and that being outdoors contributed to a sense of calmness and well-being.
