PEAC ONLINE PROGRAM - ROUND THREE 2010
The PEAC Online program offers courses to PEAC students who have trouble accessing courses at the regular PEAC Centres, or who prefer to learn in a more independent and flexible manner.
By participating in an online PEAC course the students have the opportunity to:
- Develop specific course content outcomes from a variety of Learning Areas;
- Develop skills in personal self-management and using information and communication technologies to share their learning; and
- Work with other like-minded peers from across Western Australia in an innovative learning environment.
Students should be aware that it requires a good deal of self discipline to complete an Online course and that the activities will be as challenging as, if not more challenging than, those done in the regular PEAC classroom. At the same time, many find the courses great fun and enjoy working with their online classmates. Students need regular access to a reliable computer with the Internet and reasonably up to date programs in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. We encourage classroom teachers to utilize the online courses as part of their provision for their gifted students, by allocating at least one hour of class time per week for the students to work on their online course. This is flexible and can be negotiated between the classroom teacher and student.
In 2010 we have made changes to the structure of the online program and will be running courses in three rounds instead of two semesters. This coincides with the structure of the in-class PEAC program. Round Three Online courses will run for 10 weeks commencing in Week 8 of Term Three, Monday 6 September and finishing in Week 7 of Term Four, Friday 26 November .
Round Three Courses:
SPY SCHOOL
Are you a fan of James Bond? Have you ever wondered what it might be like to spy for your country? In this course you will have revealed to you some of the many skills of espionage, such as ciphers and codes, covert operations and ‘dead drops’. You will also research some famous spies in history and learn about the ingenious technology used by spies of yesterday and today.
CSI FORENSICS
Become a Crime Scene Investigator and learn the forensic techniques that are used to catch criminals. Practise fingerprinting, handwriting analysis, DNA analysis, chromatography and more as you use the evidence and your own deductive thinking to solve a crime online.
MYTHBREAKERS
The popular television program, “Mythbusters” is based on the concept of exploring urban myths with a view to replicating the conditions of the myths and seeing if they can be confirmed, seen as plausible or completely “busted”. In this course you will have the opportunity to do much the same as the TV show. You will examine a number of myths, develop your science investigation skills and, having selected the myth you wish to study in depth, set up the testing conditions to confirm or break those myths!
BRAINBUSTERS CHALLENGE
“A man goes into a bar and asks for a drink of water. The girl behind the bar gives him a glass of water and then suddenly screams.” What possible explanations are there? What is it the more you take away, the larger it becomes? If you love these and other types of lateral and logical thinking problems, and enjoy a bit of brain gymnastics, then this is the course for you.
VET SCIENCE
Join the PEAC Online School of Veterinary Science and explore the wonderful world of animals. Develop your skills and understanding in taxonomy, anatomy, physiology, pathology and animal behaviour; dissect a virtual frog; debate some ethical issues; and make a diagnosis for your animal patients once you have graduated.
HARRY POTTER
Are you one of those people who have read every Harry Potter book (probably on the day of release) and seen every one of the movies – several times? In this course we investigate the wonderful writing of J.K. Rowling and look at how well this has translated onto the big screen. We look at characters, plot, themes and humour – and then there is the ultimate Harry Potter Quiz!
SPORT SCIENCE
Sports scientists are growing in demand with the ever-increasing focus within the sporting world on achieving the best results possible. Through the study of science and sport, researchers have developed a greater understanding on how the human body reacts to exercise, training, different environments and many other stimuli. We will look at the areas of physiology, biomechanics, sports technology and physics.
OCEAN SAFARI
Put on your SCUBA gear and join us as the PEAC Marine Research cruiser departs on this amazing ocean expedition. Dive and explore the varied ecosystems of the blue planet from the alien-like creatures lurking in the deep to the beauty of the coral reefs. Investigate the rich biodiversity of our oceans and explore ways to protect them.
MATHS DETECTIVE
Are you a skilled maths investigator? Do you love to solve intriguing, brain-teasing problems? Join up as a PEAC Maths Detective and see if you can get to the bottom of a series of ‘mathematical crimes’. Try this one for starters: “Several houses have been burgled on the same street. The order of the houses burgled is as follows: 1, 3, 4, 7, 11 and 18.” Where do you think the burglar will strike next?
X-FILES
The PEAC Bureau of Investigations is looking for bright young minds to help unlock the secrets of the X-Files. Develop skills in investigating strange phenomena and unexplained mysteries, to find out the difference between fact and imagination. Interpret evidence, interview witnesses and check sources as you work your way up to Special Agent status. |
