Overview

The Policy for the Education of Gifted and Talented Students indicates that there are two levels of provision for gifted and talented government school students in Western Australia: school-based and supplementary. Primary Extension and Challenge (PEAC) is a centrally supported supplementary program.

PEAC in the West Coast Education District caters to the special learning needs of gifted and talented students in Years 5, 6 and 7. PEAC centres offer a wide range of extension courses as well as specialist courses in a variety of community and educational settings.

The West Coast Education District PEAC staff also offers a professional development program for teachers to support school-based provision for gifted and talented students K-7. An emphasis is placed on teaching and learning strategies which support the district Curriculum Improvement Program. Supporting teachers through professional development means that gifted and talented students, including early childhood students, can be catered for at the school level.

The Department of Education staffing is allocated across four PEAC centres in the district:

  • Balcatta PEAC Centre, Balcatta Senior High School
  • Padbury PEAC Centre, Padbury Senior High School
  • Kinross PEAC Centre, Kinross Primary School
  • Mt Claremont PEAC Centre, Mt Claremont Primary School

Background information on current PEAC personnel is highlighted in The PEAC Team.

The West Coast Education District comprises 94 government primary schools. Identified students from these schools have access to programs at Balcatta, Kinross, Mt Claremont and Padbury PEAC centres. Offering programs across the four centres provides a wider choice and flexibility in selection of courses.
